Being an adult is something; the test is when life changes and new chapters begin. I remember so well when I entered that chapter where various changes were coming my way. Joining the chapter on marriage and then balancing that with motherhood and becoming the new kid in town was quite a lot. It’s one thing to embark on a new chapter of marriage. It’s another adapting to a new environment, stepping out of my comfort zone, starting this new chapter in my life in a new location, and trying to make sense of it all in unfamiliar territory. Adapting to change is never easy, mainly when you are used to your life as you know it, so here are a few ways you can help yourself to adapt.
1. Be open-minded
- Of course, this will be easier said than done, but when you receive something with an open mind and do not overthink it or over plan the next move, you are far more likely to adapt to it slowly. Also, it’s easier to adjust and roll with the punches if you don’t have preconceived notions about it.
2. Step out of your comfort zone
- Change is the ultimate test to get you out of your comfort zone. To truly adjust, you have to think differently and be willing to step entirely out of your comfort zone. To assimilate into this new chapter or phase in your life, be ready to try new things, meet new people, and step out of all you know.
3. Lean into your support system
- Sometimes change can get isolating, and when you are dealing with a considerable life change, you tend to feel very lonely. So more than ever, this is when you need to lean into your support system and speak to your people. Open up to them, maybe not necessarily because you need their advice, but to have a sounding board or listening ear.
4. Make your mental health the number one priority!
- We tend to get be carried away because of change, and all the moving pieces. Your mental headspace is the first place to be attacked, but it’s essential to do everything possible to protect your mental health. Seek guidance if it gets too overwhelming.
